Re: Equipment - because you can't have enough gadgets, right?!

May 24, 2009 by imdadoc

Rich  sent this to me cause he couldn't get in:

Good morning Gary,

Glad you got your computer back up.

If someone would like to purchase Nik Software I have a discount code worth 25%. It is not good on any software currently on sale but everything else (inclulding bundles) it will work. It is courtesy of David Ziser from his Digital Wakeup Call seminar and should be good for some time.

I can't get into the camera club forum so I figured you could let them know.

The discount code is DZISER

I also received my Really Right Stuff L-plate and clamp Friday. My son installed the clamp on my tripod and it is soooo smooth. Expensive but the best quality I have ever seen. I think I will be able to hold my camera but I will be using the tripod more.

Have a great Memorial Day.

Rich

Re: Signing/naming glossy prints - help

May 16, 2009 by imdadoc

I use photoshop but this will work in Elements too. First I create a brush. Make a new document with white fill, then add a text layer with your name using any font. Next flatten the image and create a brush. I think it is under the edit menu. Make sure you save the brush set. Another method is to write your name on a white piece of paper, scan it into photoshop and then create the brush set. To use, create a blank layer above all else, choose your brush signature and stamp on the blank layer. Next you can transform and.or rotate the brush to your liking. Flatten and save.

Mel, I got my "shutters" mixed up. I use shutterbugs store front. Same criteria.

Mel, I have been using this service since last November. Have not sold anything yet but have had some traffic. Maybe my brand of photos is not what the general public is looking for. I am kind of "out there" don't you know. Can't comment on quality and such. You might want to consider using SAMS if you have a membership. They do good work and are inexpensive. then you could set your prices and not worry about taxes and profit sharing. Just a thought.

Re: All Things Photoshop

Mel,

I have seen the same thing and read of many complaints regarding cs3. I am using cs4 now and it does seem better. Having said that, I let the printer manage color. I use an epson 1280 and I am pretty happy with the results. I also try to use lightroom for printing as much as possible just because there are so many more options available to you. Color management is a tricky thing and that is why I think it would be a good investment for the club to purchase a monitor color calibration system. Then members could rent it occasionally to tweek their monitors.

Re: Assigned Subjects - club competition

Mel,

I checked this site out. It is cool. I have taken shots similar to these but really didn't  know why I was doing it other than I thought the shot looked neat. Bring this up at the May meeting.

I don't use this method. I either use an identiy plate in lightroom or a signature brush in Photoshop.

Re: Displaying Photos

December 18, 2008 by imdadoc

I wish I had some place public to display my photos other than the sites provided by OCC. In my house most of the walls are covered with family photos (my wife rules). Our den room is covered with historical pictures of our families. The basement rec room is largely mine to display my work. It is a place where we spend most of our time. We do have a digital frame upstairs that we turn on for special occasions. Anyone have ideas where we as a club could display?

I use the Canon G9. Sweet light weight camera that lets me have full control when I want to. Seldom use a tripod although I probably should and probably will in the future. I use Photoshop CS3 extended for post processing. Which leads me to ask "How expert are others with Photoshop?". I think I'm pretty good but I am learning new things almost everyday. I have an infrared filter but have not tried it out yet. I also use Lightroom 2 for image workflow and some pre-post processing.

Jeff , thanks for the heads up. It works fine for me. I am using Firefox for the browser. I will check it out with IE. In the future I will probably get rid of frames on the web site. Gary..........

Jeff, that is a pretty interesting process. I think I will investigate this method as I am also in the process of changing how I do things. Gary.....

Currently I make a folder for the competition year. Then inside this folder I make folders for each month. Inside each month I make a folder for prints. Then as I prepare images I move them to the appropriate folder. Gary........

Mel, thanks for the tip. I don't know how many are using lightroom but it would make a great program and might help members make a decision on a future purchase. Gary........

Re: All Things Photoshop

November 11, 2008 by imdadoc

Mel, I try to use layers as much as possible for the non-destructive editing. Sometimes I place a mask on the duplicated layer to place an effect on the underlying layer. Hope this is clear. I am better at doing than telling. Gary......
